Mexico Retreat Location Information
We’ve put together some facts around the countries and locations where we host our retreats. The factsheets we have put together are intended to help you to prepare for the retreat in terms of what to bring climate-wise, what the main currency and official language is, as well as information on how to get there. The following overview is for Mexico -and the particular retreat location ‘Casa Om’ in Puerto Morelos.
In addition you can also read this brief article on ‘What to bring to a yoga retreat’.
Official Language | Spanish. English widely spoken especially in the more touristy areas like Cancun. |
---|---|
Currency | Mexican Peso (MXN). US dollars are often accepted in larger hotels and shops, but we recommend to have Mexican Pesos so you’re able to pay in cash at smaller shops, bars and restaurants. Card payments are also not necessarily accepted in smaller shops and restaurants. |
Main airport(s) relevant to our retreat location | Cancun International Airport (CUN) |
Travel Documents | For most travellers (incl. US, UK, rest of Europe) only a valid passport is required. It is strongly recommended that the passport is still valid for another 6 months, apart from that there are no restrictions. |
Getting there / airport transfers | You will receive individual email with specific instructions regarding your airport transfer from Cancun International Airport. |
Check in / out times | Check in into rooms is from 1pm, so in case you arrive prior you can relax by the pool or go to the beach until your room is ready. Check out is from 11am, please make sure you have your bags ready and packed by that time. You can leave them at Casa Om until your airport transfer on the final day and there is also a shower in case you would like to use it before leaving to the airport |
What to bring | As it is very hot and humid in Mexico, please bring plenty of sunscreen, there is nothing worse than sitting in a hot yoga class being burned! Due to the climate, mosquitoes might come out at night and early morning, please bring a mosquito repellent, or otherwise coconut oil has helped as well in the past. Please also bring a bottle which can be refilled with water to minimize waste. Please note: Tap water in Mexico is generally not drinkable – only use filtered water from provided water dispensers or purchased water! |
Yoga facilities | There is a dedicated, heated Yoga room at Casa Om on the 2nd floor of the Villa where we will be holding most Yoga classes. There is also a platform directly at the Ocean - 2 min. walk away -(outside) where we will be doing classes once or twice (weather permitting). It's a beautiful spot and a complete new experience doing the Yoga outside instead of in a heated room. All Yoga mats and towels are provided. |
Laundry | Once a day Casa Om will be collecting Yoga clothes from all Retreat guests which they wash - this is free of charge. For any additional items there is a local laundry in town which charges around 1-2 US Dollars |
Tipping | As tipping is done in very different ways across the globe, please note that in Mexico salaries are quite low we always suggest to tip in restaurants and bars for around 10% minimum. This is not an obligation but just a suggestion. As for the Casa Om, we will be collecting at the end of the week tips for the whole week which will get divided there to the cleaners and kitchen staff. It is at everyone’s own discretion to leave as much or as little as they like, however from past Retreats a tip of anywhere between 20-50 USD would be adequate we believe. |
